Thank you for the deeper dive on the draft exemption story. It puzzles me why they would not be eager to help, but I am not Jewish or Israeli, so I do not know all the context. I hope a compromise can be reached.

Colin Powell's dictum, “You break it, you own it”, is the path to disaster.

If it's not already broken, then you shouldn't be there!

As soon as Powell said that in Iraq, we were headed for disaster...a disaster we repeated in Afghanistan. It turned out that to "fix it", at least in the American imagination, was to keep troops there until the occupied countries were a clone of the US...or until we bled out...whichever came first.

We should have gone in, done what we needed to do, and then gotten out: and gone back in if needed...again, for a short time.

Alas, Israel may not have that luxury: Gaza is too close. Moreover, the world has it out for Israel--and all of the western world is experiencing suicide ideation. So, bombing Gaza back to the stone age, and blowing up all the tunnels, does not appear to be on the table.
